Buying Considerations

There are a few factors to consider when buying your next waterfowl call:

Single-Reed or Double-Reed?
  • Single-Reed Waterfowl Calls: Known for their versatility, single-reed calls provide the most control over volume and tone. It can take some time to master the single-reed call, but it is a worthwhile investment.
  • Double-Reed Waterfowl Calls: These calls are ideal for beginnersthey are easier to control than single-reed calls and are capable of producing incredibly lifelike sounds.

  • Wood: The classic duck call, wood produces a soft, mellow sound. For all of its charm, wood can be prone to cracking and splitting over time, especially when exposed to moisture, but it should serve you well for many years. You can help preserve the life of a wooden call by taking it apart and allowing it to air dry after each hunt.
  • Polycarbonate: Made of molded plastic, polycarbonate calls are affordable and durablea great starter call.
  • Acrylic: A popular choice because of its clear, sharp tones, acrylic offers the benefits of wood without the susceptibility to moisture damage.
  • Hunting Area

If youre hunting on a large river or lake, youll probably be better served by the long-range capabilities of the single-reed call. If youre set up in a smaller area like a pond or in a flooded timber, a double-reed call should be just fine.
